As one of Kalideck’s cornerstones, sustainability is the hallmark for the products that this merchant supplies to the print, packaging and graphics industry, hence it being proudly FSC®-certified for almost 15 years. It is also the foundation upon which Kalideck has been developing its packaging division over recent years.

Kalideck’s paper business is driven by its commitment to provide a comprehensive range of sustainable products that will meet the needs of its customers, Kalideck has partnered with Ranpak, a supplier of paper-based in-the-box packaging solutions, to bring its range of secondary and tertiary packaging solutions to the Southern African market – suffice it to say that it is a match made in heaven.

There are three types of packaging, being primary, secondary and tertiary, which are used to ship products from the production line to the consumer; each level represents a different scale. Primary packaging is the packaging that holds the product i.e. as a general rule, if it is in direct contact with the product, then it is primary packaging. Its main purpose is to protect, preserve and in most cases, make it easier to handle the product.

Secondary packaging is the second level of packaging that refers to containers designed to carry and store designated quantities of primary containers. It exists in various forms and contains varying numbers of products, usually fulfilling two purposes: to provide additional protection to the products and ease of storage. Depending on the product sold, end users and consumers may encounter secondary packaging instead of primary packaging, typically in the form of boxes or cases referred to as packs, especially when it comes to online shopping.

Tertiary packaging is the third level of three types of packaging used to protect manufactured goods for shipping or storing. It is used to protect not only the product but also its secondary and primary packaging. It is destined mainly to warehouses, such as a wholesaler or a retailer’s storage room. Due to its size, form factor and high product quantity, it is generally not meant to be seen directly by consumers.

‘When it comes to secondary and tertiary packaging, Ranpak covers literally everything you can think of. They have solutions for cushioning and protection, wrapping, void fill and even a paper-based cold chain offering,’ explained Nick Gillings, Commercial Director at Kalideck. ‘Kalideck’s value proposition has always been to bring innovative solutions to our valued customers.’

PadPak® Senior for high volumes and heavy cushioning

‘First in our line-up is the PadPak® Senior, which is mostly utilised by heavy industry to protect items such as spare parts, belts, pumps or any big equipment parts that need to be protected and cushioned inside a box when transported. This is because packages are often mishandled during transportation making it necessary to take precautions to reduce the risk of damage or breakages when goods are being shipped,’ he added.

The PadPak® Senior converts multi-ply kraft paper into highly shock absorbent cushioning pads to protect fragile products in transit. Utilising a patented folding and stitching process, the converter forms 2- and 3-layer paper into protective cushioning material. The machine is height adjustable, rotates for use in a vertical or horizontal position and has four modes of operation, including preset lengths and utilises a footpedal. It therefore provides excellent ergonomic qualities for ease of operation.

FillPak TT® brings fast and optimal void fill in your shipping box

Void fill is filler material used to pack into gaps and empty space in your packaging, locking products in place and preventing them from moving during shipment. Ranpak’s FillPak TT® (Table Top) paper packaging solution is an efficient, versatile solution that dispenses on-demand at high volumes.

‘This void fill e-commerce protection device is all about speed, sustainability and cost effectiveness. It forms a single-ply, fanfold kraft paper into a PaperStar™ configuration, which maximises paper volume, resulting in void filler material that offers excellent physical properties when absorbing shocks and protecting fragile products,’ said Nick.

Geami Wrap ‘n Go and Geami WrapPak EX Mini

He continued, ‘On the wrapping side, Ranpak’s range of Geami products replaces bubble wrap, providing protection that is as good as the plastic alternative.’ Wrapping is often an important element of packaging, providing protection against surface abrasions and scratching that can result when several items are packed together in the same box.

The Geami Wrap ‘n Go™ converter expands die-cut kraft paper into a protective 3D honeycomb structure made out of angled paper cells that have been locked together. A modular design enables you to meet your own packaging requirements, specific as they may be, without the need for adhesive tape or cutting.

This offering is the perfect fit for retail environments, with the option to use this die-cut paper solution on its own or to combine it with soft tissue paper. Either way, Geami Wrap ‘n Go™ gives you a unique and sustainable way to securely wrap your products.

‘Complementing the Wrap ‘n Go is the Geami WrapPak EX Mini, a handy dispenser box that also expands die-cut kraft paper into a 3D honeycomb structure and is ideally suited for use on any table top, counter or packaging area – the perfect solution for retail outlets, e-commerce startups and small warehouses,’ Nick elaborated.

‘The Wrap ‘n Go and EX Mini solutions replace air-bubble packaging with sustainable and cost-efficient protection, providing an outstanding in-the-box presentation and unpacking experience for customers.’

Your cold chain solution with RecyCold® climaliner™ and RecyCold® cool packs

Paper has a highly competitive insulation value, which is demonstrated by Ranpak’s total cold chain packaging solutions comprising of paper-based insulating RecyCold® climaliner™ combined with RecyCold® cool packs that are highly sustainable paper pads.

‘Ranpak’s cold chain offering is a lot more niche and is designed to substitute polystyrene inners and plastic ice bricks with paper-based alternatives.  In terms of the inners – or RecyCold® climaliner™- the WrapPak® Protector converts kraft paper into cushioning or a thermal liner to insulate the box,’ Nick stated.

‘Then to keep the box cold, what’s known as RecyCold® gel, a 100% biodegradable cooling gel is on the inside of polyethylene coated paper pouches. These pouches are then frozen and placed inside the box insulated with climaliner™. RecyCold® cool packs are available in various sizes and weights to accommodate a myriad of single-use commercial applications or reuse by consumers. At end of life, the biodegradable gel can be disposed of in nature or composted, with the pouch discarded as household waste.’

Ranpak’s diverse offering seeks to replace secondary and tertiary plastic packaging in a more sustainable manner. The added benefit of opting for a paper-based alternative is that paper is malleable, which means that it can be moulded into various shapes and is far easier to fit into all the nooks and crannies when one is packing products into boxes. Research has shown that Ranpak’s solutions provides better protection than most other offerings in the market place.

Kalideck works with each business to determine the most cost-effective option based on an in-depth cost analysis that includes anticipated square meterage usage. Nick said that the sales process is oftentimes a lengthy one because it includes a trial phase so that one can see how everything works and identify how these solutions can improve one’s packaging ability.

‘What sets our offering apart – and it’s a big factor – is that the customer doesn’t have to invest in capital equipment in order to have these machines on the floor, even in instances where the machine breaks or needs to be repaired, we will literally go in and swop it out for another one. The only requirement is that the paper is purchased from Kalideck,’ Nick asserted.

Ranpak’s machines are unique patented systems designed to converting paper – and doing it really well. The paper utilised in this equipment is kraft paper in either recycled or virgin formats, which has been converted into packs or specialised size rolls that fit into the machines.

Packaging is one of the biggest growth areas in the world, which is why Kalideck has invested heavily into building a large packaging division. To take the packaging boards segment as an example, the enterprise now boasts two industrial sheeters, comprising of a four reel and a two reel stand sheeter. Both are 1.7 metres wide and are complemented with a fully automated sheeter-rewinder.

‘Kalideck is evolving all the time. We have an office paper segment, as well as commercial printing, packaging board, graphics (focusing on hardware, software and consumables) and an entire technical service side. We are continuously identifying the sectors that are ripe for growth and investing in them, whilst maintaining a healthy presence as the dynamics of the market dictate,’ he concluded.
